INTRODUCTION :-

The Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) at AIIMS, New Delhi is dedicated to delivering high-quality blood transfusion services, education, and research. The Main Hospital Blood Centre operates under the DTM as a hospital-based facility. Initially established as a blood bank in 1957 and licensed in 1981, the department evolved into the DTM in 1996, with the MD program in Transfusion Medicine commencing in January 2017.

DTM began by offering essential blood transfusion services such as the collection, testing, and issuance of blood to patients. During the 1980s and 1990s, the centre expanded its capabilities to include component preparation and advanced immunohematology testing. From 1991 to 2000, the centre introduced donor and therapeutic apheresis services. and the establishment of the Department of Transfusion Medicine and the initiation of educational programs. Between 2011 and 2020, the MD Transfusion Medicine course was launched, transitioning the department from a service-oriented unit to an academic one.

Currently, the DTM provides advanced blood banking and transfusion services. On average, three students graduate annually from the MD Transfusion Medicine program, with a total of seventeen graduates to date. In addition to service and academic initiatives, the department has been actively engaged in research since its inception.

DTM has also developed and implemented a comprehensive Quality Management System tailored to the scope of the blood centre’s activities. The system adheres to national and international standards, including ISO 15189, ISO/IEC 17025, and NBTC, and all procedures are conducted in accordance with ethical practices.

The Main Hospital Blood Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi, holds a valid license (No. 646) issued by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and is approved by the Drug Controller General (India), under the Central Licensing Authority as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules – 1945 and subsequent amendments.

Currently Department has total three faculties and one Chief Medical Officer (SAG). Department is Head by Dr Hem Chandra Pandey, Additional Professor.
