The Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi, stands as one of India’s foremost centres of excellence in the field of respiratory and sleep medicine. Since its inception in May 2011, the department has remained steadfast in its pursuit of clinical excellence, academic rigour, and scientific advancement in the field of respiratory disease.
Our clinical infrastructure comprises a dedicated inpatient ward, an Intensive Care Unit equipped with state-of-the-art critical care technologies, a daycare unit with lung cancer chemotherapy facility, and a comprehensive suite of diagnostic laboratories including sleep lab, pulmonary function lab, and allergy lab. The department offers the entire spectrum of advanced diagnostic and interventional pulmonology procedures, rendered with precision and care by a highly skilled team of clinicians, faculty, and trainees, in keeping with the highest standards of contemporary respiratory medicine. The department runs a busy outpatient clinic with over 10,000 new cases and over 28,000 returning cases for the year 2024-25. Additionally, the department runs specialty clinics for interstitial lung diseases, lung cancer and sleep disorders.
As a nationally recognized training centre for the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, the department fosters a vibrant academic culture through structured weekly seminars, case-based discussions, and sustained engagement in national guideline development. The department is also at the forefront of research in respiratory diseases and has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence in Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Thoracic Oncology by the Indian Council of Medical Research. It has also been recognized as a Centre of Excellence in Breath Research. Our flagship programme, PULMOCRIT, is a much-anticipated annual workshop and conference that unites pulmonologists, intensivists, and sleep specialists from across the nation, featuring immersive hands-on workshops and expert-led symposia on emerging clinical challenges in the field.
