The department is very keen on developing Indian solutions to Indian problems. Most of the research conducted in the department is aimed at this goal. A weekly research meeting is used as a means to assess the progress in this area.

The ongoing research projects include:

  1. Palliative unilateral drainage of inoperable carcinoma gallbladder, a trial between endoscopic drainage and percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage
  2. Differentiation of malignant and benign hilar strictures using radiological and laboratory investigations.
  3. The role of thromboelastography in patients with extrahepatic portal venous obstruction
  4. The role of gastrograffin in adhesive intestinal obstruction
  5. Neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy in adenocarcinoma of the gastro-oesophageal junction.
  6. A randomized controlled trial of retrosternal versus posterior mediastinal route of gastric pull-up after oesophagectomy
  7. A randomized controlled trial of hand-sewn versus stapled cervical oesophagogastric anastomosis
  8. Quality of life assessment after surgery for chronic pancreatitis
  9. Prospective comparative study of gastric emptying in classical Whipple versus pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD)
  10. Quality of life assessment in patients with inoperable carcinoma oesophagus after oesophageal stenting
  11. Clinical and genetic profile of young patients with carcinoma oesophagus.
  12. Neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy with oral capacetabine in carcinoma stomach
