 National Typodont Skill Workshop-2018

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Deformities, Center for Dental Education and Research AIIMS, New Delhi, under the leadership of Prof.Dr. O. P. Kharbanda, organized “A-Z of Hands on Orthodontics National Typodont Skill Workshop, 2018” from 5th-7th October 2018.

It was attended by over 100 enthusiastic post graduate students from more than 30 dental colleges across the whole country.

As Orthodontics being one of the oldest dental specialty has varied treatment options and techniques being followed. This workshop aimed to introduce a common platform to share knowledge and bring the participants at par to each other in clinical practice.

It was a three days’ workshop with lectures on first day.  The next two days were totally dedicated for hands on skill development. Prof. Vinay Kumar Bahl, Academics Dean, AIIMS New Delhi consented to be the chief guest for inauguration of first day program that was organized at Ramalingaswamy board room. This three days’ workshop was inaugurated with lamp lighting by the chief guest and Lt. Gen. Sanjay Londhe, Director General Dental Services, Colonel Commandant Army Dental Corps who was the guest of honor, followed by reciting of Ganesh Vandana by the residents of the department. The occasion was graced by Prof. Shailesh Deshmukh, President Indian Orthodontic Society and Heads of orthodontic department from various dental colleges of NCR region. The inaugural ceremony ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Vilas Samrit, organizing secretary and Assistant Professor Department of Orthodontics, CDER.

The lectures began with the background and evolution of edgewise technique by Prof.Dr. OP Kharbanda, Dr Pradeep Jain and Dr. Ritu Duggal and so on. The lectures were of interactive kind, where participants were encouraged to ask questions and get their queries solved. The extensive day ended with lecture on lingual orthodontics by Dr Sanjay Labh highlighting the differences between buccal and lingual technique.

 

The venue for 2nd and 3rd day hands on skill workshop was CDER. The participants were divided into two groups based on the courses they opted- Pre-adjusted edgewise and lingual.  It comprised on lectures followed by hands on skill demonstration. The lingual course was demonstrated by Dr Sanjay Labh and team while the pre-adjusted edgewise was lead by Dr MS Sidhu, Dr Sunanda Roychoudhary, Dr Sridhar Kanan on 1st day followed by Dr Jayesh Rahalkar and Dr Puneet Batra on 2nd day. They were assisted by team of residents of the department of Orthodontics, CDER AIIMS. They were instilled with knowledge of wires and loops right form basics to clinical tips. The enthusiasm of the participants lead to the extension of the conference well beyond its stipulated end time of 5 pm.

The highlight of the conference was banquet dinner organized at Indian Habitat Center by the organizers. The banquet was graced by the presence of alumni and faculty members of CDER AIIMS.

The second day ended with a group photo of all the participants as remembrance and were validated with certificates. The feedback of the participants was encouraged to improve and re-organize many more such workshops in the future.
