Division of Pediatric Oncology

The Division of Pediatric Oncology at the Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS, New Delhi has come a long way and has grown by leaps and bounds to establish itself as one of the leading pediatric oncology centres of India. The division was established under the able leadership of Prof LS Arya almost four decades ago. It has recently become the third unit in the country offering a superspeciality program (D.M) in the field of Pediatric Oncology.

The unit registers about 350 new cases of childhood cancers annuallyand prides itself in providing expert and world class care for common as well as rare pediatric cancers. Spectrum of cancers treated at the unit includesleukemias, solid tumors , bone tumors, histiocytosis , retinoblastomas etc. The late effects clinic of the unit was established in2006 and is one of the very first in the country.  The bone marrow transplant facility recently started by the division expands the repertoire of malignancies that the division can cater to.

The division amalgamates the three pillars on which AIIMS has been established- namely dedicated patient care, teaching and research. The services and multimodal care to cancer children are provided via specialty clinics (Pediatric Oncology Clinic, Pediatric Cancer Survivor Clinic) day care facility, specialty intra and inter departmental consultations, emergency servicesand extensive support from various NGOs and philanthropic organizations.

The faculty is actively involved in basic and clinical research on pediatric oncology via research grants (AIIMS, DBT, ICMR, DST, National Cancer Grid, CSIR & UGC) and steering /participating in various multicenter national studies.

In agreement with the mandate of AIIMS to provide leaders in super specialty care the Pediatric Oncology DM Program is designed to provide a diversified, organized educational environment that will allow the candidate to develop both the clinical and research skills necessary to become an academic Pediatric Oncologist. The aim is to prepare the future Pediatric Oncologists who will represent the clinical work force, educators, and investigators during the first quarter of the 21st century.

Professor Rachna Seth, an alumnus of SMS medical college, Jaipur, is Professor at the department of Pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.   She heads the division of Pediatric Oncology and is the coordinator ofthe super specialty DM program in Pediatric Oncology at the department.

Dr Seth has over 150 publications in journals of both national and international repute and has contributed chapters in prestigious books like Essentials of Pediatrics by OP Ghai, Essentials of Tuberculosis by V Seth and Emergencies in Children by Meharban Singh and has received extramural research grants from DBT, DST, ICMR, National Cancer Grid and JivDaya Foundation.

She has been instrumental in starting the DM and PhD program in Pediatric Oncology, After Treatment Care services (Pediatric Cancer Survivor Clinic), minimal residual disease (MRD)estimation, state of art Day Care Facility and Cancer cytogenetics in the department.

Areas of interest and research include: understanding the mechanisms of poor response/relapse in ALL, cancer survivorship & late effects, biomarkers in infections, histiocytosis and retinoblastoma. Besides receiving the Best Young Investigator Award and Histiocyte Society fellowship, work mentored by her on cytogenetics (role of IKZF-1 in childhood ALL), infections, hyperleukocyosis ,has won various prestigious national awards.

Patient friendly initiatives started by her to enhance Pediatric Oncology services at the department include extensive collaboration with NGO partners, facilitation of government funds for patients, formation of a support group (Sambhav), parent education program, public lectures, teleconsultation and oncology helpline.

She has recently been nominated as Chair of late effects subcommittee of Indian Pediatric OncologyResearch Group(InPoG) andis steering the first multicenter nationwide childhood Cancer Survivor Registry.

Her vision is to take the division of Pediatric Oncology at the department to greater heights, where every child id treated with dignity, where holistic care is provided to children diagnosed with cancer encompassing the attributes of equality, empathy and patient friendliness.
