Personal Profile

Dr. A. K. Mukhopadhyay is Professor of Laboratory Medicine since 01.07.2002, took over as the Head of the Department since 01.04.2006.

Medical graduate (MBBS) from University of Calcutta (1977), post graduate (MD) in pathology from AIIMS (1981), a Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India (1988).

Following Appointment as Lecturer in Pathology for Clinical Pathology for the Central Laboratory of AIIMS in 1985, he became an integral part of the movement that transformed this central laboratory  service area into a full-fledged Academic Department in 1988. He was officiating Head of the department from 01.06.94 to 26.03.96. He was also instrumental in establishing a 3-year residency program leading to MD degree in Laboratory Medicine.  MD course started in the Dept. since  July 1997 and so also the PhD  Program in Laboratory Medicine. The dept. at present performs nearly eleven million investigations per year.


Prof. Mukhopadhyay has been working with apparently two visions; one on the ground, and another on Ideas, which he envisages would combine in near future, in this twenty first century.

Vision on the Ground:

Academic Reform and organizational Reform of the medical laboratory disciplines in a teaching institution with hospitals are in his focus. As in the discipline of Medicine, three year residency leading to MD degree in general Medicine has become a basic postgraduate degree followed by super specialty three year residency leading to DM degree in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric, Pulmonary Medicine etc., as in the discipline of Surgery, three yr. residency leading to a basic postgraduate degree MS, followed by super specialty three year residency leading to M.Ch. Degree in Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiac surgery, Uro surgery, GI Surgery etc., so also in laboratory Medicine three year residency leading to MD degree is envisaged to be the basic postgraduate degree in Laboratory discipline followed by three year residency leading to DM degree in Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Virology, Histopathology etc.


Vision on ‘Big Ideas’:

There are defined non-observable operators, which influence biological behavior at the observable level.  Theses operators are Information, Mind, Life, Self and Consciousness. They have their individual operational mechanics and interconnected mechanics. Together they constitute a hierarchically nested multi-layered decision-making labyrinth of Systems Psyche, which have molecular links with signal network at the level of the brain as well as at the level of the individual cell. Biologically Inspired Systems Science, Information Geometry, Ladder of Cognition, the interface of Psychology and Robotics are in his focus.

Vatican's Pontifical Academy of Science invited Prof. Mukhopadhyay as an observer from India in their Meeting on Science for Man and Man for Science in 1999.

Information-split phenomenon:

Information-split as a process is involved in creation of space time in one hand, and opens up hitherto unexplored resource of information-based energy on the other hand. He proposes that information-based energy is pollution-free, inexpensive and inexhaustible. It leads us to the dawn of a new energy revolution. Information-split process also explains the psycho-somatic connection.
