Research Focus of the Lab

The primary goal of the lab is to understand major biological processes at the molecular level with the ultimate aim of alleviating human diseases and to explore the diagnostic/prognostic markers along with novel therapeutic targets/agents. Our research focuses on the importance of the bone marrow microenvironment in multiple myeloma, role of T cells in immune evasion by tumour cells in urinary bladder and cervical cancer and to explore the anti-cancer potential of natural products. Our lab also aims to decipher the immunopathogenesis of autoimmune skin disorders (PV and Vitiligo).


Our most recent Research Goals:

1.      To explore the potential mechanism of chemo-resistance in cervical cancer with a special focus on autophagy and its associated molecules.

2.      To elucidate the Hyaluronic acid signalling cascade and the role of RASSF1A in modulation of hippo pathway in Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder

3.      To explore the role of shelterin complex and ECM proteins and their regulation by microRNA in Multiple Myeloma.

4.      To unravel the mechanisms involved with immune evasion employed in tumor sustenance.

5.      To study the role of γδ-T-cells and dendritic cells in immunopathogenesis of skin disorders.

Research Group Members


1.    Dr. Rehan Khan, National, PDF, DST

    Dr. Rehan Khan has completed his PhD in Biosciences from JamiaMilliaIslamia, New Delhi. His doctoral thesis was on the Effect of Cinnamon Extract on Angiogenesis and Cyclooxygenase in Multiple Myeloma. The central theme of his overall research is the role of microenvironment in cancer progression and in case of Vitiligo; oxidative stress, autoimmunity, and neural hypothesis. He has also been involved with a search for non-invasive biomarker in urothelial carcinoma of bladder cancer using proteomics approach and in defining the role of genetic, epigenetic and immunological components in the pathogenesis of active Alopecia Areata. Currently, he is a National Post-Doctoral Fellow (DST) and is presently exploring the potential mechanism behind chemoresistance in cervical cancer. 

Mr. MohdTarique completed his M.Sc. in Biotechnology at JamiaHamdard University, New Delhi. After that he registered for PhD programme in the Department of Biochemistry, AIIMS. Currently, He is evaluating the mechanism of conversion of regulatory T cells towards IFN-γ secreting cells using in vitro cytokine. In addition to this he is also examining the functional interaction of B regs, Th17 cells and Tregs in leprosy patients. Work focus also turned towards analysis of gamma delta cells in leprosy patients. Recently, he unravelled the polymorphisms of 13 different cytokines genes in leprosy patients in patients associated with slow and fast progression of disease? (Cytokine.2015 May; 73(1):61-5.)

Mr. Raman Kumar completed his M.Sc. in Biochemistry from JamiaMilliaIslamia University, Delhi. He is working on Multiple Myeloma. His PhD title is “Exploring the role of shelterin complex and its associated molecules in Multiple Myeloma”.



2.    Mr. VivekAnand, PhD student

Mr. VivekAnand completed his M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Patna University and M.Tech. in Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai. His area of interests are Immunology and Tumor biology. At present he is working on Hyaluronic acid signalling cascade in Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder.


3.    Ms. MadhuramKhandelwal, Fourth Year PhD student

Ms. MadhuramKhandelwal completed her M.Sc. in Medical Biochemistry from Rajasthan University of Health and Sciences. She is working on Bladder Cancer. Her PhD title is “Role of RASSF1A in modulation of hippo pathway in Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder”.


4.    Ms. Nidhi Gupta, Third Year PhD student

Ms. Nidhi Gupta completed her M.Sc. in Biochemistry from AIIMS, New Delhi. She is working on Multiple Myeloma. Her PhD title is “Exploring the role of Versican and its regulation by microRNA in Multiple Myeloma”.


5.    Mr. Dayasagar Das, Second Year PhD student

Mr. Dayasagar Das completed his M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology from Kasturba Medical College,Manipal University. His field of interest is Immunology and currently he is working on autoimmune blistering skin disease, Pemphigus Vulgaris. His PhD title is “Role of gamma delta T-cells in immunopathogenesis of Pemphigus Vulgaris”.


6.    Mr. Santosh Babu, First Year PhD student

Mr. Santosh Babu completed his M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology from Sikkim Manipal University. He is working on Vitiligo. His PhD title is “Role of gamma delta T-cells in immunopathogenesis of Vitiligo”.

7.    Ms. Ashu, Second Year M.Sc. student

Ms. Ashu is currently pursuing M.Sc Biochemistry from AIIMS. She has completed her graduation from University of Delhi in Biochemistry. Her M.Sc. title is “Role of dendritic cells in immunopathogenesis of Vitiligo”.


8.        Mr. Jaipal Singh Rana, Junior Lab Technologist

Presently, he is working as Junior Lab Technologist and joined AIIMS in 1988. He has 28 years of experience in research related activities such as supervision and maintenance of equipments. He helps in upkeep of culture room and culture work.
