Introduction

It is a referral service. Centre for Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences. The Centre focuses on clinical application, including diagnostic formulation, cognitive retraining in brain functioning following brain attack/insult/injury. Retraining in areas including attention, perception, affect, language and cognitive development etc. Psychological assessment  includes neuropsychological assessment / evaluation including clinical diagnosis, comprehensive interview; behavioral observations, assessment with series of neuropsychological tests, interpretation, report writing neuropsychological formulation including cerebral impairment, severity of injury and disability; neuropsychological retraining including basic function approach to improve the functional skills improving basic pre morbid functions of persons daily life; neuropsychological reorganization including compensation for the deficit when deficient function can neither be reorganized nor restored, clinic based therapy; home based therapy. Out patient service (OPD). There are 4 OPD/week. Teaching of MBBS and Nursing Students. First step towards planning of research work to be done for formulation. Quality research and national and international collaborations is being carried out.

REFERRALS

Patients are referred from Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Physical rehabilitation and medicine, Medical superintendent’s office (for medico legal cases), Endocrinology etc.

THE UNIVERSE OF CASES

Stroke, epilepsy/seizures, dementia, Parkinsonism, depression, anxiety, psychotic traits, head injury, tumor, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, for assessment of fitness/disability, counseling, therapy, cognitive retraining etc.

KINDS OF CASES

  • Neurology: refers patients with stroke, epilepsy/seizures, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, counseling etc.
  • Pediatric Neurology: refers patients for social adaptive functions, base line intelligence/IQ or counseling etc.
  • Psychiatry: for neuropsychological assessment including depression, anxiety, psychotic traits, suicidal attempts etc. for diagnostic formulation etc.
  • Neurosurgery: refers patients like head injury, tumor, sub arachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) etc. for neuropsychological assessment, assessment of cognitive functions including memory, mental status (which helps in comparing the patient’s improvement, with the premorbid functioning).  Counseling, cognitive retraining, assessment for fitness etc.
  • Physical rehabilitation and medicine: for assessment of fitness/disability while the final disability is given by that department.
  • Medical superintendent’s office: for medico legal cases.
  • Endocrinology: for IQ assessment.
