The Department of Dental
Surgery was upgraded to the Center for Dental Education and Research
(CDER) in 2003. At present, it has 8 faculty members.
The Center’s achievements
over the past 3 years and plan of action over the next 3 years is
presented in brief herewith.
At present, the Center
offers PG courses in 4 specialties, namely

Surgery
It aims to impart post
graduate degree courses (MDS) in all the nine specialties of
Dentistry besides conducting Continuing Education courses and
providing leadership in Dental Research.

Department
of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
The Department
of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics has always
been in the forefront and is rated as one of the finest
departments in Center for Dental Education and Research
(CDER) for quality patient care, teaching, training and
research. Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) was started
in January 2004. Residents join this
department from various parts of the country. It
is equipped with state of art machinery, which includes
surgical microscope, facility for bleaching and latest
technology for routine procedures. It runs a
specialty OPD and postgraduate clinic daily.
The department has set up its own
high standards in patient care, education and research.
All junior residents take part in the Didactic
teaching activities regularly. The activities are for 3
days a week, which includes seminars, journal clubs, and
case discussion. This is in addition to daily teaching
activity based on the clinical cases discussion. The
department provides state of the
art, compassionate care to all patients requiring its
specialized services. We are committed to academic
excellence in teaching and research, and strive to be
leaders in the specialty. The department has contributed
significantly in developing and promoting our speciality
and is represented in the national and international
conferences Our motto is to develop a friendly

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Deformities
MDS Orthodontics course was the first
Post Graduate Programme in Dentistry at AIIMS started in
1986 with two admissions/year. It is a full time
three-year Residency programme, admission to which is
through an all India open competition.
The programme highlights, a major emphasis on case
selection diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment
with variety of functional and state of the art
contemporary fixed and modern techniques. MDS
Orthodontics programme at AIIMS, has integrated
curriculum on all aspects of treatment of malocclusion
and dentofacial deformities. The department has a strong
clinical and research emphasis on Inter disciplinary
management of Cleft Lip and Palate. A mandatory research
Thesis that is a prerequisite to be submitted 6 months
prior to summative examination and evaluation makes a
important component of the curriculum

Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry
Department of Pediatric and
Preventive Dentistry aims in improving oral health of
the children by an approach based on the universally
accepted principles of prevention. The core philosophy
of the Pedodontics recognizes oral health as an
important part of general health. The department
believes in prevention and early interception of oral
diseases such as dental caries, periodontal diseases,
malocclusion and traumatic injuries.
The department caters to the need of
the disadvantaged strata of our society as well as
excels in giving care to the medically compromised and
children with special needs. The facility provides
comprehensive oral health care under sedation to
children in pre-cooperative age group and those with
special needs.
Efficient behaviour management helps
in management of children of pre-cooperative age.
Besides giving therapeutic care for dental problems the
unit is working towards prevention of dental diseases by
parent education and frequent oral hygiene awareness
program. The use of newer dental materials and latest
technology along with high standard of infection control
helps to offer excellent dental care to the pediatric
patients.
