Dr.
Supriyo Ghose joined the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic
Sciences at AIIMS in 1971, from where he topped in his MD in
Ophthalmology in 1974 as well as in the MAMS in 1975. His earlier
interests were in Ophthalmoplasty, Trauma, Glaucoma and microsurgery
under the influence of Prof Y Dayal & N N Sood; Prof L P Agarwal
encouraged him to focus his attention on Paediatric Ophthalmology
especially its more obscure areas. Since 1977, Dr. Ghose has been
looking after this Clinic at Dr. R P Centre, AIIMS, where he is
currently Professor of Ophthalmology in charge of the Paediatric
Ophthalmology and Ophthalmoplasty Services since 1993.
His wide interests encompassing
autorefractometers and refraction, and basic sciences including
ocular pathology, microbiology and pharmacology in relation to the
eye, are embodied in over 140 papers including about 50 publications
in diverse foreign journals; chapters on eye problems and ocular
emergencies in children especially in the IAP publications; and over
200 presentations in several forums and conferences in the country
and abroad. It is one of these delivered at the Ahmedabad AIOS
Golden Jubilee Conference, which gave him the coveted Hanumantha
Reddy Award. He has had the honour of being invited to serve at
various places in diverse capacities of speaker, panelist,
instructor, moderator, convenor, Guest Faculty, Session Chairman,
Selection Committee member, technical expert, as well as paper
setter for postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations, and thesis
evaluator and external examiner for MS in Ophthalmology. He has
attended several International Congresses and chaired sessions in
them. Amongst others,
he has been earlier awarded the S K Biswas Memorial Oration &
the Best Poster Award at AIOS, and recently the C L Malhotra
Research Prize in Pharmacology & Allied Sciences for their work
on centbucridine, a newer local anaesthetic.
To the All India Ophthalmological
Soc (and to his local Society at Delhi too), he has contributed in
various humble capacities. He is keenly interested in sports with
several earlier awards to his credit. After having been Chairman of
Acad and Research Committee at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad
Centre, he is presently Chairman of the Medical Board for appeal
cases, besides being Chairman too of the Sports Committee. He has
actively participated in meetings of ophthalmic microbiology &
pathology, and chaired sessions and symposia on ocular
pharmacology. Amongst
many other speciality workshops, Prof. Ghose has organised since
1980 four comprehensive Post-Doctoral National Workshops in
Paediatric Ophthalmology at AIIMS, besides such meets in other
states of the country also.
