Cornea and Cataract & Refractive Surgery Services (Unit-III)

The specialties being looked after by Unit III include Cornea, Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Ocular Surface Disorders and Contact Lens. Due to the untiring efforts of its distinguished faculty past and present, a host of achievements pertaining to clinical and research areas was possible.

Cornea

Innovative techniques in Keratoplasty were introduced. Several modifications were introduced in techniques of penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty to cater to special situations. Some of these include:

  • Penetrating keratoplasty with tuck
  • Lamellar keratoplasty with tuck
  • Large diameter lamellar keratoplasty
  • Autorotational keratoplasty
  • Autotransplantation
  • Endothelial keratoplasty such as DSAEK

Ocular Surface Disorders

Stem Cell facility

  • Stem Cell transplantation was introduced in the management of ocular surface disorders.
  • Stem cells are being culture by ex-vivo expansion of harvested autologous/cadaveric limbal stem cells.
  • Oral mucous membrane stem cell culture was started.

Amniotic membrane

  • Procurement, preparation and transplantation of amniotic membrane for the ocular surface reconstruction

Keratoprosthesis surgery

  • Was started in 1970s by Prof. Madan Mohan.

  • OOKP, Champagne cork keratoprosthesis is being used with success.

Refractive Surgery

Refractive Surgery Services was initiated by Prof.  Madan Mohan under Indo- Russian collaboration. LASIK facility was started in 1998 at R.P. Centre, first government run institute to open the facility for all needy patients. Present facilities include:

  • Lasik, Epi-Lasik
  • Phakic IOLs : for high myopia was started in RPC in the year 2003-2004.
  • INTACS : First institute to start INTACS in India
  • LASIK Lab for counseling and work-up of patients.

Contact Lens facility

  • Includes manufacturing lab for RGD lenses only institute/centre to have a comprehensive facility
  • Low Vision Aids Services

Cornea Research Lab: Cornea Research Lab. was established in the year 1999 to facilitate clinical research.

Equipped with state of the art technology such as:

  • Confoscan,
  • UBM
  • Specular Microscope
  • IOL Master
  • Orbscan
  • Amniotic membrane storage facility

Surgical skills development centre

  • Was started in 1996 by Prof. Dada.
  • It was only the Centre to start such facilities, helping young residents and practicing consultants from various parts of the country.

Ongoing Collaborative programmes

  • FDA approved site for conducting phase 3 clinical trials related to conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and corneal graft rejection.

  • Collaboration with DST, DBT and ICMR related to corneal graft rejection, Stevens Johnson syndrome, genetics of corneal disorders, stem cell research.

Cataract

  • Under the leadership of Prof. Madan Mohan, extracapsular cataract extraction along with IOL implantation was introduced in 1986. In 1991, phacoemulsification with foldable IOLS was started and recently, multifocal IOLS are being implanted.
  • Community outreach camps are being organized in different parts of the country to clear the cataract backlog.
  • Pediatric cataract surgery is being performed with IOL implantation.
