The specialties being looked after by Unit III include
Cornea, Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Ocular Surface
Disorders and Contact Lens. Due to the untiring efforts of its
distinguished faculty past and present, a host of achievements
pertaining to clinical and research areas was possible.

Cornea
|
|
Innovative techniques in Keratoplasty were introduced.
Several modifications were introduced in techniques of
penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty to cater to special
situations. Some of these include: |

transplantation was introduced in the management of ocular
surface disorders.

are being culture by ex-vivo expansion of harvested
autologous/cadaveric limbal stem cells.

Oral mucous
membrane stem cell culture was started.

Amniotic membrane |

Procurement, preparation and transplantation of amniotic
membrane for the ocular surface reconstruction

Keratoprosthesis surgery |

Was started
in 1970s by Prof. Madan Mohan.

OOKP,
Champagne cork keratoprosthesis is being used with success.

Refractive
Surgery
|
|
Refractive Surgery Services was initiated by Prof. Madan
Mohan under Indo- Russian collaboration. LASIK facility was
started in 1998 at R.P. Centre, first government run institute
to open the facility for all needy patients. Present
facilities include: |

Phakic IOLs
: for high myopia was started in RPC in the year 2003-2004.

INTACS :
First institute to start INTACS in India

LASIK Lab
for counseling and work-up of patients.

Contact Lens

manufacturing lab for RGD lenses only institute/centre to
have a comprehensive facility

Cornea
Research Lab:
Cornea Research Lab. was established in the year 1999 to
facilitate clinical research. |

Was started
in 1996 by Prof. Dada.

It was only
the Centre to start such facilities, helping young residents
and practicing consultants from various parts of the

Ongoing
Collaborative programmes
|

FDA
approved site for conducting phase 3 clinical trials related
to conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and corneal graft
rejection.

Collaboration with DST, DBT and ICMR related to corneal
graft rejection, Stevens Johnson syndrome, genetics of
corneal disorders, stem cell research.

Cataract
|
-
Under the
leadership of Prof. Madan Mohan, extracapsular cataract
extraction along with IOL implantation was introduced in
1986. In 1991, phacoemulsification with foldable IOLS was
started and recently, multifocal IOLS are being implanted.

Community
outreach camps are being organized in different parts of the
country to clear the cataract backlog.

Pediatric
cataract surgery is being performed with IOL implantation.
