For details of the above courses write to the Registrar, AIIMS.
The Department runs a schedule of academic activities directed at Post graduate students (seminars. journal clubs, case discussions and research activity reviews) on every Thursday (0800to 0900 and 1500 to 1700). Post-graduate students or practitioners wishing to attend any of these sessions may please contact Head of the Department , Professor R.C Deka.
The Department also has a tradition of welcoming ENT Surgeons from other centers for short term training as observers. For details of the same please contact Professor R. C. Deka.

RECENTLY COMPLETED RESEARCH
1 Results of Cochlear Implantation
in Post-Lingual deafened adults with B/L Profound Hearing loss-
Twenty-five patients with profound Bilateral sensorineural hearing losses
were studied with regards to the etiology of their hearing loss. Six of
these cases with no benefit with a hearing aid and conventional auditory
rehabilitation underwent Cochlear Implantation.. Post-implantation patients
demonstrated significant improvement in open set speech recognition as
tested by monosyllabic words, Spondee words, and sentences. Effective
oral communication was possible without the use of oral or lip-reading
cues. A significant and commensurate reduction in Disability scores was
simultaneously demonstrated.
.
2 Role of partial maxillectomy in carcinoma of maxilloethmoid complex
and hard palate.- Twenty cases with carcinoma of
the maxillo-ethmoid complex were operated either by Partial and Total
Maxillectomy, The selection of the surgical procedure was based on the
disease extent. Partial Maxillectomy was found to be associated with significantly
decreased morbidity. Oncological clearance and surgical margins in the
Partial Maxillectomy group was comparable to the Total Maxillectomy group.
.
3. Role of chemoprophylaxis in Major head and Neck surgery for prevention
of post operative infection. Shoit Course
Antibiotic Chemoprophylaxis (3 days) was compared to the standard 10 day
chemoprophylaxis course in patients undergoing Head and Neck Surgical
Procedures. Both protocols yielded comparable results in Clean Wounds,
The Short Course was however not found to be adequate in the Clean- Contaminated
and Contaminated wounds.
4. Results of Tympanomastoid Surgery with cartilage tympanoplasty
- Long term results of cartilage tympanoplasty were
prospectively assessed. No significant reduction in hearing thresholds
was observed over continuing follow-up ( five years). Initial experience
with increasing the middle ear depth by use of a free muscle flap for
epitympanic obliteration and augmentation was associated with improved
hearing results.
5. Incidence & pattern of lymph node metastasis in the clinically
N0 neck of patients with oral cavity cancer (T2-T4 stage) - A
high incidence of occult lymph node metastasis is seen in this group (40%)and
this is not very well detected by conventional methods. Sentinel lymph
node showed detection rate of 47.8% of the nodal metastasis and an overall
sensitivity of 33% of detection. An overall predictive value of a negative
sentinel node was 80%.
6. Role of stroboscopy in benign laryngeal lesions -
60 patients of benign laryngeal lesions were assessed by stroboscopy .
Improvement in the diagnosis made by stroboscopy over conventional methods
was 8.3% and the management plan of the lesions changed after stoboscopic
evaluation in 22.2% of cases.
