Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav

Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav is currently Professor & Head of the Department – Centre for Community Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India. He is the founder member and regional co-ordinator for South Asia of International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders since last 25 years.  

Dr. Pandav completed his MBBS and later MD in Community Medicine from AIIMS, New Delhi and M.Sc from McMaster University Hamilton, Canada with specialization in Health Economics, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.  He is also an alumnus of the Department of Human Nutrition, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. 

He was former President of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine and is currently the President of Indian Public Health Association. 

Dr. Pandav’s has carried out pioneering research in field of iodine deficiency disorders and has been part of numerous epidemiological studies of IDD in the region and globally. He was instrumental in developing a novel model for population based screening of neonatal hypothyroidism in rural areas of India in 1980s. His other notable contributions include studies on health economics of IDD and studies delineating health research and health policy interface of IDD. Dr. Pandav has been WHO & UNICEF consultant on Iodine deficiency disorders since 1983 and to over 60 countries of WHO/UNICEF, South Asia, Western Pacific, Middle East and African countries at National, regional and global level. 

Dr. Pandav has been working in the areas of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD), Micronutrients, Health Systems Research, Health Economics, Health Policy, Health Programme evaluation, Public-Private Partnership & Human Rights Issues.

Dr. Pandav is Co-Editor of 14 books on Health Sciences and authored about 328 papers published in various National and International Journals. He is Advisory board member and Reviewer for various reputed Journals. He is currently member of many technical/expert groups constituted by various Ministries at the state and national level, NGOs and International Organisations.

Dr. Pandav has received many national and international awards  including the most prestigious  Dr. M.K. Seshadri Prize &  Gold  Medal  by  Indian Council of Medical Research   for  the  year  2000  for  his  outstanding  contributions  to the  field  of  Community  Medicine.
