Hands-on Training Programme for Young Science

The departments of Anatomy, Paediatrics & Haematology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi are organising the 1st Hands-on Training Programme for Young Science Postgraduates/Undergraduates/Technologists on Diagnosis of Genetic Disorders using Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Methods from 22nd August to 3rd Oct. 2005.
The objective of the workshop is to create awareness and provide hands on training to young scientists/technologists in running of genetics and molecular genetics laboratory facilities, handling/maintenance of equipments, preparation of tissue culture media, reagents, etc.
The training will have Laboratory orientations by Senior faculty/Research Scientists. The demonstration of all the following techniques and will get good amount of time to practice independently. These are as follows -
v Orientation to laboratory techniques:
Laboratory set up for cytogenetic diagnosis; Sample collection; Tissue culture laboratory set up with special reference to chorionic villi; Amniotic fluid and cord blood culture; Imaging in cytogenetic analysis; DNA Extraction; PCR Techniques; Gel preparation; Trouble Shooting and maintenance of equipment
Laboratory Exercises: Laboratory set up; Sterilization of lab instruments, media, glassware etc; Chromosome preparation; Use of binocular microscope; Use of high speed centrifuge, CO2 incubator, gel apparatus, UV transilluminator, gel documentation system, photography, Flow cytometer, sequencer etc; DNA extraction from blood, CVS; Sample amplification using PCR; Gel preparation
The number of trainees for the course will be limited to 8 - 10 participants from all over India. Efforts will be made to provide admissible amount of travel allowance.
Participants will have to make their own arrangements for accommodation.

The applications should be submitted latest by 13th August, 2005, through Fax/Email to the Chief Organiser (address given below) and must include the following:
Ø Curriculum vitae Ø Email, Phone/Fax number and complete address Ø Statement of applicant's actual research area & benefits expected from attending the programme Ø Letter of recommendation from the Supervisor/Officer in charge Ø Application to be forwarded by head of the department/institution. In case application is submitted through email, it needs to be forwarded by the head of the department/institution after final selection. Successful candidates will be notified by 16th August, 2005.
