August 20, 2005 Objectives: To enhance the knowledge and create awareness of young scientists in diagnostic, prognostic and screening of genetic disorders, through a series of lectures and a hand-on experience on the recent molecular and conventional cytogenetic/genetics techniques. This objective will be fulfilled through organising a Workshop on "Diagnosis of Genetic Disorders using Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Methods". During the workshop, there will be lectures by leading Geneticists, Clinicians, Haemtologists, Molecular Biologists, Scientists for Equipment maintenance and hand-on laboratory exercises. Following broad aspects will be covered. § Laboratory set up for cytogenetics § Tissue culture laboratory set-up with special reference to prenatal diagnosis work § Chromosome preparation from peripheral blood and tissues for prenatal diagnosis § General principles and application of molecular techniques in prenatal and postnatal diagnosis § Imaging in cytogenetic analysis § Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis forre- & postnatal diagnosis § DNA extraction, Selection of Primers, Polymerase Chain Reaction Analysis § Chromosome aneuploidies - Prenatal and Postnatal diagnosis, using FISH technique § Prenatal Diagnosis of Thalassemia, Haemophilia & Ducchene muscular dystrophy § Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) § Trouble Shooting and maintenance of equipment § Prenatal diagnosis, Genetic Counselling and Ethics § Micro array to detect gene expression § Proteomics and bioinformatics
The number of participants in the laboratory course will be limited to 15 students from all over India. Efforts will be made to provide admissible amount of travel allowance.
