INTRODUCTION

 

The Department of Hematology was established in January 1989. It is a unique department with clinical and laboratory faculty working together under one roof together for better co-ordination, resident training and research activities. It is the only department of its kind in the country. It provides clinical facilities in the OPD, day care centre and for indoor patients.

Doctorate in Medicine courses were initiated in Clinical Hematology for persons with MD in Medicine or Pediatrics and Doctorate in Medicine course for Hematology for residents with MD degree in Pathology.

Hematopathology courses for MD pathology residents and Ph.D course for students of Molecular biology are also being conducted in this department. Department has its own SOPs and protocols. Department has been selected as a nodal centre by the National Accreditation Board for laboratories by Government of India for external Quality Assessment Programme for hemogram at a national level. Department itself is a part of Quality assessment program for hematological tests from Sheffield UK.               

 The Hematology Department is involved in various research activities which include Thalassemia, Hemophilia, Thrombophilia, Aplastic anemia, Leukemia, ITP etc. The department has six  faculty members, one senior research officer, one pool officer, eight PhD students, fifteen senior residents (DM students) & 15 highly competent  technologists to man the laboratories.

                The Department has published several books such as Recent Advances in Hematology I and  II, Thalassemia Care and control in the New Millenium Perspectives in Thalassemia Hematopathology Atlas and Manual of Hematopathology.
