Introduction

The Department of Gastroenterology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences was started in the year 1971 with an aim to create qualified gastroenterologists for the country. Professor Badri Nath Tandon was instrumental in creating the department of Gastroenterology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was the first head of this department and continued to lead it until his retirement on 31 August 1991. Thereafter , Professor Rakesh  Tandon was the chief of  Gastroenterology from 1991 to 31 December 2002. Professor MP Sharma was the chief of Gastroenterology from 1 January 2003 to 30th April 2004. At present, Professor S K Acharya is the chief of Gastroenterology.

 

By now, the department has produced 75 DM trained students in Gastroenterology. At present, the chiefs of Gastroenterology in major institutions of the country ( viz. SGPGI, Lucknow, PGIMER, Chandigarh, GBPant ,Delhi; SMS College, Jaipur; MLN College, Allahabad , AIIMS, New Delhi)are alumni of the department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS. Since, the inception of this department it has provided infrastructure for state of the art services and also provided training to many physicians in specific areas like luminal Gastroenterology, liver diseases and endoscopy
