Professor  RAMESH CHANDRA DEKA

PROF. RAMESH CHANDRA DEKA, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences is a renowned ENT specialist. He took over as Director AIIMS on 10th March 2009. He was holding the position of Dean from May 2006 to March 2009. He has been Heading the Department of Otorhinolaryngology since 1995 and still continues to Head the department. Prof Deka continues to see patients in OPD and attends the Operation Theatre. Born on 01/10/1948 in Assam. Dr. Deka did his MBBS from Gauhati Medical College in 1969 and MS (ENT) from AIIMS in 1973.
Dr. Deka joined the faculty position in AIIMS in 1981. By virtue of his long exposure and functional requirement as the Dean and Head of the Department, Prof. Deka has vast administrative experience and knowledge of Rules and Regulation of AIIMS. Prof. Deka has earned a unique reputation as a faculty, surgeon, conscientious researcher. Above all, he is a compassionate doctor and a good human being. In the field of otorhinolaryngology and medical education, he is considered among the best in the country. He is also known as an educator and motivational expert in education.

Prior to this he worked as a faculty in Kasturba Medical college, Manipal where he was reader and head of the department of ENT (1976-1979) and in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (1979-1981). He has also been keenly associated with community health programmes during his 37 years of experience in teaching, patient care and research.

Prof. Deka has received two national Gold Medals for his outstanding research in Cancer(1975) and Neurotology (1984) from Association of Otolaryngologists of Indian and Neurotological Society of India respectively. He received his further training in 1977-1978 in otology, neurotology and microsurgery of the ear under Prof. G.E. Shambaugh Jr. and Prof. George A. Sisson at the North Western University, Chicago, USA. Dr. Deka has also undergone training in otology under Prof. Nager at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland and under Prof. JA Kirchner at the Yale University Medical Center, New Haven, Connecticut, USA in head & neck surgery. He has conducted neurophysiological studies on inner ear with Prof. David Lipscomb at University of Tennessee, Knoxville during his fellowship in USA (1978).

Dr. Deka had undergone training in neurotology under Prof. C.F. Claussen in Wurzburg University & Neurotology Institute, Badkissingen, Germany in 1984.

In 1994, on a WHO fellowship, he worked with Prof. David W. Kennedy in the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and learned functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Dr. Deka also worked with Prof. Robert Jackler, Prof. R. Schindler, Prof. H. Dedo and Prof. R. Kaplan in the area of head & neck surgery, neurotology and skull-base surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

In 1996, Dr. Deka went to Australia to undergo training in cochlear implant surgery at the Melbourne University and the Bionic Ear Institute, Melbourne.

Prof. Deka is a Fellow American Academy of Otolaryngology (FAAO) since 2004, as Fellow, International Medical Sciences Academy (FIMSA) since 2007.

Dr. Deka is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India.An accomplished ENT surgeon and a reputed teacher, Dr. Deka has performed over 275 cochlear implant surgeries, including 200 in children, with excellent results. He is an expert in endoscopic sinus and laryngeal/voice surgery. Dr. Deka has published more than 200 research papers in national and international journals. He has also contributed chapters in several Indian and foreign books. Seven books, including three leading text books, published abroad, contain citation of Dr. Deka'a works in the field of otology, audiology, facial palsy, evoked potential, neurotology, rhinology and laryngeal cancer.

Dr. Deka delivered guest lectures as an invited faculty and distinguished visiting professor at leading centers/ institutions in Australia, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Republic of Korea, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Riyadh (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), Dubai (UAE) and Russia. He has also given guest lectures and orations in a large number of national and international conferences, seminars, and symposia. In addition, Dr. Deka gave the following Orations which are considered significant professional/academic honours: Dr. LH Hiranandani Oration, GD Birla Oration, Dr. NL Hiranandani Oration, Dr. Dukhanram Oration, Dr. C. Das Oration, Dr. Shyamal Saha Oration (Dhaka) and Smt. Udhi Devi Oration only to name a few in his field of speciality. He has also delivered several key note lectures and addresses as chief guest, guest of honour and President of many scientific/professional organizations in otolaryngology and allied areas. As the Dean and Director of AIIMS Prof. Deka has delivered several lectures/guest orations in many conferences, symposia, workshops in India and Abroad, such as ,UAE-Dubai, Russia, Seoul Korea, Philippines, Denmark, etc..Prof. Deka has also been associated with many academic and other educational organisations/universities as expert member/executive body members and also advisory member of Government of India and many state governments in the area of health care sector
