Training

 

One of the primary mandates of the centre is to build capacities of human resources in the country in the area of substance use disorders. The centre has been involved in providing training to doctors and other categories of staff members since 1989. The centre has developed curricula, training schedules, modalities and resource materials for training of trainers, Medical Doctors (GDMOs), nurses and laboratory personnel. Till date about 40 courses for doctors have been organised, either at the premises of the centre or at various other sites in the country. Various manuals are available. The training programmes have been reviewed and modified through workshops of resource persons. Some of these training programmes were conducted as a part of the WHO (India) biennium activities. These are some of the training programmes organised by the centre in the recent past:

 

Training:

  • Training of Trainers programme for doctors on Substance Use Disorders, held at NDDTC, AIIMS, Oct 2005, Nov 2005, Dec 2005, Mar 2006, Sep 2006, Nov 2006, Mar 2007.
  • Training programme for nurses at NDDTC, AIIMS, October 2007
  • Training programme for doctors from Department of Community medicine from St. Stephens Hospital, New Delhi, November 2007
  • Training programme for doctors (Psychiatrists) working in government hospitals, Punjab, December 2007
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) working in state government hospitals / health centres, organised at District Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, March 2008, as part of the district based model project
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) working in state government hospitals / health centres, organised at District Morigaon, Assam, March 2008, as part of the district based model project
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) working in state government hospitals / health centres, organised at District Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, November 2008, as part of the district based model project
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) working in state government hospitals / health centres at various North-eastern states, organised at RIMS, Imphal, Manipur, December 2008, as a WHO Biennium activity
  • Training programme for paramedical staff (nurses, health workers, ASHA, ANMs, Anganwadi workers etc.) working in state government hospitals / health centres at Morigaon, Assam, January 2009, as part of the district based model project
  • Training programme for paramedical staff (nurses, health workers, ASHA, ANMs, Anganwadi workers etc.) working in state government hospitals / health centres at Meerut, UP, February 2009, as part of the district based model project
  • Training programme on Agonist maintenance (OST) for medical doctors and paramedical staff at the centre premises in Ghaziabad in March 2009.  The second course was held by RIMS, Imphal in collaboration with our centre in April 2009, as a WHO Biennium activity
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) working in state government hospitals / health centres at Srinagar Medical College, Srinagar in April 2009, as a WHO Biennium activity
  • Training programme for doctors (medical officers) and other paramedical staff working in various hospitals / health centres at and around Digboi, Assam, (organised at AOD Hospital Digboi) in April 2010
  • Training programme on OST with Buprenorphine for doctors (medical officers) and other paramedical staff working in various government hospitals as well as NGO (IDU TI) staff at five districts in Punjab (organised at Chandigarhin August 2010 and at Amritsar in October 2010)

 

Note: The resource persons for all these training programmes include the faculty and staff members of NDDTC. Faculty members from other institutes are also sometimes invited as resource persons for the training. 

Recently the centre has initiated a new project focused on training of doctors in the area of substance use disorders. The project envisages imparting training to at least one doctor in each of the district hospital in the country, so that more than 500 doctors of country will receive training over a period of three years. This project is being funded by the National Fund for Control of Drug Abuse (NFCDA), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Other institutes collaborating with NDDTC, AIIMS in this venture are:

  • Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi
  • Government Medical College (GMC), Chandigarh
  • KEM Hospital, Mumbai
  • National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangaluru
  • Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal

 

Miscellaneous:

  • Faculty participated in Training programme in Psychiatry for General practitioners, organised at G.B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi, under ministry of health & FW, Govt of India.
  • NDDTC organised a public symposium on Assessment of Alcohol Abuse at Central Water Commission, New Delhi, November 2005.
  • NDDTC organised a public symposium on Assessment of Alcohol Abuse at NTPC, Dadri, January 2006.
  • NDDTC organised a public symposium on Assessment of Alcohol Abuse and workplace intervention at the monthly meeting of the Ghaziabad Management Association, in September 2007.

  

Besides these, the faculty from the centre has also been involved in providing training to doctors, nurses, project managers and counsellors from various other organisations. These include the NGOs supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, National Institute of Social Defence, Regional Resource and Training Centres, National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, National AIDS Control Organisation, State AIDS Control Societies etc.

The centre has also produced resource material in the form of manuals for training. These manuals are distributed to the participants during training programmes. In addition these manuals are also available for free download.
